Satellite Phone Cost In 2024-Best Prices & Plans

Inmarsat global express satellite

How Much Does A Satellite Phone Cost In 2023?

The cost of having satellite phone service depends on the type of plan and the options included. There is no long distance or roaming fees when you subscribe to either of the top 2, Iridium or Inmarsat sat phone networks in 2023.

Globalstar’s network is more regionally focused so if you travel outside of the United States, Canada or the Caribbean Islands, their roaming charges will apply. You should always stay aware of the rates to keep costs down! Pick the best plan for your needs.

Satellite phones typically vary in price from $400 to over $1,500. In addition to sat phone cost you need a satellite service provider to connect with the network for phone service.

Generally speaking current choices are to purchase a monthly or prepaid plan from $30/month to a $4000 prepaid SIM. Depending on your provider, voice calls range from $.0.15 to $2.00 a minute. Satellite calls between different satellite networks can be more expensive. Please read up on voice calls, sms text messaging, and incoming call charges with your satphone provider.

Sometimes costs saved are not defined by dollars. An important side note I'd like to touch on as a service announcement to our readers is to Please check with the U.S. Dept of State before traveling abroad with a satellite mobile device. They will inform you of any advisories, restrictions or country specific bans.

China Plots To Blowup Starlink?

China researching how to destroy and blow up starlink

China is now researching how to destroy Starlink. Will they blow it up?

Apparently Starlink destruction is seriously being looked into. Plotting is being done.

PCMag reports that China's Modern Defence Technology journal published a report last month warning of the potential dangers posed by SpaceX's Starlink satellites.

The study was led by Ren Yuanzhen, a researcher with the Beijing Institute of Tracking and Telecommunications under the PLA's Strategic Support Force, and was co-authored by several senior scientists in China's defense industry.

"While Starlink satellite internet is booming and also because of its huge comprehensive application potential, it has brought hidden dangers and challenges to our country," the paper reads. "A combination of soft and hard kill methods should be adopted to make some Starlink satellites lose their functions and destroy the constellation's operating system."

Supplying subscribers with satellite-internet is no issue, but the researchers note that Starlink may be utilized for a variety of US military purposes, like blasting internet communications to US personnel and aircraft.

Chinese researchers and defense officials are also concerned that the Starlink network could be used to not just detect and track Chinese missiles and satellites, but also to annihilate them.

As a response, the academics are urging China to enhance its “space war strategy” and find ways on how they can defend and attack in case something happens.
So apparently China is very serious about this.

They think that Starlink poses an imminent threat. It's unclear if they can actually blow it up but it looks more like they will try to disrupt the whole SpaceX system. Very interesting indeed considering how helpful Starlink has been in the Ukraine.

How Starlink Kept Ukraine Connected

Starlink Has Provided 12,000 Dishes To Keep Ukraine Connected

Ukraine’s Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation, Mykhailo Fedorov, said that Elon Musk’s SpaceX Starlink dishes have become an important part of his country’s cyber war versus Russia.

At the 2022 Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Fedorov shared that the SpaceX  has provided over 12,000 Starlink dishes to Ukraine. He also stated that the terminals are crucial to Ukraine’s information war on social media against Russia.

Starlink's Crucial Role in the Ukraine

Ukraine’s Minister of Digital Transformation stated that Elon Musk provides Starlink dishes free of charge, reported Bloomberg. Although, Fedorov also added that there might be a different arrangement between the SpaceX CEO and the US Agency for International Development, and European entities for the Starlink dishes provided to Ukraine.

Starlink has helped Ukraine provide accurate and true information about the ongoing war. Elon Musk tweeted that Starlink has resisted Russian cyber attack and continues satellite internet service to Ukraine.

Starlink has also allowed people to stay connected with family globally and helped the Ukrainian government continue to function to the best of it's ability.

“All critical infrastructure uses Starlink, all structures that are needed for the state’s functioning use them,” Fedorov said. “We need to receive them constantly because they are one of the elements of the foundation of our fight and resilience,” Fedorov said.
